When To Eat What?

This is a follow-up to last weeks newsletter on what to eat. This information is taught in great detail in Body By God: The Owner's Manual For Maximized Living by Dr. Ben Lerner. The subject of when to eat the right foods is just as important as eating the right kinds of foods. By following these guidelines you can, in Dr. Lerner's words, "eat like an elephant and look like a gazelle."

You must consider the different food groups and exactly what they are designed to do within the body. There are three major groups of foods, these are their primary actions.
  • "Good" Proteins: These are used to build and repair the body, primarily the muscles.
  • "Good" Carbohydrates: These are used to "burn" for energy.
  • "Good" Fats: The bulk of the nervous system (the most important system in your body) is composed of these.
Now that you know what they are, you can apply it to how they should be used in simple terms.
  • Breakfast: Need lots of energy to get you through the day, though your body does most of it's repairing at night. What to eat? Mostly carbohydrates with only a little fat and protein.
  • Lunch: Only half the day remains so you won't need nearly the energy you did in the morning, yet you're still a while from nighttime. What to eat? Moderate carbohydrates and only a little more fat and protein than breakfast.
  • Dinner: The day is almost done, no need for massive energy unless you want to stay up all night. And you're almost ready for repair stage. What to eat? Mostly protein with a little carbohydrates (veggies only) and fat.
A much more detailed breakdown with suggestions can be found in Dr. Lerner's book. By applying these methods you can cut weight quickly even if you don't eat perfectly!
