When To Eat What?

This is a follow-up to last weeks newsletter on what to eat. This information is taught in great detail in Body By God: The Owner's Manual For Maximized Living by Dr. Ben Lerner. The subject of when to eat the right foods is just as important as eating the right kinds of foods. By following these guidelines you can, in Dr. Lerner's words, "eat like an elephant and look like a gazelle."

You must consider the different food groups and exactly what they are designed to do within the body. There are three major groups of foods, these are their primary actions.
  • "Good" Proteins: These are used to build and repair the body, primarily the muscles.
  • "Good" Carbohydrates: These are used to "burn" for energy.
  • "Good" Fats: The bulk of the nervous system (the most important system in your body) is composed of these.
Now that you know what they are, you can apply it to how they should be used in simple terms.
  • Breakfast: Need lots of energy to get you through the day, though your body does most of it's repairing at night. What to eat? Mostly carbohydrates with only a little fat and protein.
  • Lunch: Only half the day remains so you won't need nearly the energy you did in the morning, yet you're still a while from nighttime. What to eat? Moderate carbohydrates and only a little more fat and protein than breakfast.
  • Dinner: The day is almost done, no need for massive energy unless you want to stay up all night. And you're almost ready for repair stage. What to eat? Mostly protein with a little carbohydrates (veggies only) and fat.
A much more detailed breakdown with suggestions can be found in Dr. Lerner's book. By applying these methods you can cut weight quickly even if you don't eat perfectly!

What Do I Eat?

It came by request by an out of state subscriber to write about what to buy when shopping. Here is a "short list" of what you want to stick to. Other great things can be added but these are the majors that come to mind...
  • Spend MOST of your time in the produce section: You'll find the veggies most people don't buy such as Swiss Chard, Collard Greens, Alfalfa Sprouts, etc are extremely cheap though they are very powerful foods. ANYTHING that's a veggie or fruit (preferably organic) makes it on my list.
  • Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil: In very dark bottles. Organic Virgin Coconut oil is better but must be ordered from www.tropicaltraditions.com.
  • Herbs and spices: Fresh garlic, ginger, parsley, green onion, cilantro, or even jarred spices all have their benefits but make sure they have NO additives. There is an awesome website, www.HerbalAdvantage.com where you can get organic herbs for very cheap.
  • WILD Salmon: Packed with powerful oils and nutrients but make sure it's NOT farm raised.
  • Organic Free-Range Chicken: Watch the videos at www.Goveg.com and you will NEVER eat another "factory" chicken. (No I am not completely vegetarian and I DO NOT support PETA)
  • Grass Fed, antibiotic & growth hormone free beef: "Laura's" is a brand found in many grocery stores. (TIP: Look for Sirloin Tip Roasts. They are the same cuts as sirloin steaks and you can have them cut however you want, yet they are usually half the price)
  • Powerful organic grains such as Quinoa, Wild Rice, Brown Rice, Pearled Barley, and others can be purchased dirt cheap at www.sunorganicfarm.com. Organic Beans as well!
  • Nuts and Seeds: preferably organic such as almonds, walnuts, pecans, flax seeds, and sesame seeds. Again these can be found cheap at www.sunorganicfarm.com.
  • The best milk substitute to use is Almond Milk, but Edensoy soymilk, or even rice milk are ten times better than cow's milk (www.notmilk.com).
  • NO dairy, pork, shellfish, catfish, packaged foods, or canned foods and drinks should be consumed except on RARE occasion. If you eat right 95% of the time you CAN splurge occasionally and not feel guilty.
If you follow this basic guide you will spend far LESS TIME and even LESS MONEY on groceries. Surprised?

The Temple...Not For The Faint Of Heart

My biggest frustration in life by far is NOT being able to help every person I come in contact with to the degree and extent I know is possible. But the fact is that today, the high impact stress and non-stop American lifestyle is a collision course of poor health and almost everyone is onboard. We can run around doing "things" all day long but where does priority to oneself and respect of our bodies fit in? What happened to taking the time to prepare a nutritious meal, instead pulling through the drive-thru at McDonald's? Where does just 15 minutes of exercise a day fit in that will add YEARS of active life to your end? And I could go on all day about knowingly putting poisons into our body which inherently we know do more harm than good for the sake of being quick and easy.

Paul reminds us in the bible to glorify God in our bodies, not only in our spirit. Important revelation when you remember that your body is a temple of the lord as you were bought at a price! We spend a great deal of time honing and mending our spiritual lives while we let our bodies literally fall apart. Imagine if you trusted a close friend with a computer to use. Imagine how you would feel if they kept the software and operating system well kept and at peak performance, yet they spilled soda all over it, dropped crumbs, dented, banged up, never dusted, and just flat destroyed the shell. Would you feel appreciated for your gift?

It's time we respect our bodies and show others what Health is all about. I have the tools and I'm dying to share! From Chiropractic care of God's greatest creation, to nutrition and exercise there are more than enough ways to live a truly healthy and glorifying life. It is NEVER too late to be saved no matter the context, today is the day to change your future and extend your life.

"The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease. The physician of tomorrow will be the nutritionist of today." -Thomas Edison

Hurricane

As you may have realized, there was no newsletter last week as we were hiding from Katrina. I have personally been to Pascagoula with my church for the cleanup effort and have worked with the people of that area and the devastation is unimaginable. As my heart went out for those people, I couldn't help but relate it to the health condition of this country as a whole.

Imagine living on the Gulf Coast 100 years ago. Before TV's, Doppler radars, and a thorough understanding of the physics of a storm, the warning and preparation time for an event of this measure was nothing compared to what it is today. The most recent estimates in New Orleans alone is 10,000 dead. What would Katrina have done in 1905?

100 years ago Chiropractic had just been "born". With little to no understanding of how it worked, what to test for, and how the body really worked it was impossible to prevent catastrophe in the health of our nation. Our health for the last 100 years has suffered as a result.

Today Chiropractors have the diagnostic tools, treatment protocols, and complex understanding of the human body and it's physiology that make it possible to detect, warn, and avoid many of the health consequences that plague our nation.

So why are so many "staying for the storm"? Unfortunately because most simply don't know how to get the information that can save them, or are under the false impression that they can't afford to have Chiropractic care. The fact is, you can't afford NOT TO! (look at what's happening to insurance)

The hurricane is coming as long as you ignore the warning sirens. I congratulate those of you that don't ignore or "turn off" the sirens. Help others see the warnings, you could save their lives as well!
